Who should pay on a first date?
Guilty
The short answer
The person who asked usually offers to pay, and splitting is always fair. Leaving for the bathroom when the bill arrives is neither.
The ruling
From the public record. Names are replaced with roles.

Case no.PC-2026-05096
The date who paid v. The date who asked
Filed 10/07/2026
- Plaintiff
- The date who paid
- Defendant
- The date who asked
Statement of claim
He asked me out and picked an expensive place. When the bill came he went to the bathroom for fifteen minutes. I paid. He texted the next day to say thanks for dinner.
Charge
Extended absence from the table timed to the arrival of the bill
Judgment
Guilty
Date found guilty of the fifteen-minute bathroom break
Sentence
The defendant pays back half of the bill this week, and pays for the second date if there is one.
How the court usually rules on this
The court does not hold either side to an old rule about who pays. It looks at what was said: who suggested the date, who picked the place, and whether anyone offered. Splitting the bill is always acceptable. What gets a guilty verdict is avoiding the moment, for example by disappearing when the bill comes.
