Is it fair for one partner to take most of the closet?

Guilty

The short answer

No, a shared closet is split roughly in half. More space for one partner needs an agreement, not a slow advance.

The partner with three hangers left v. The partner who took the closet

Filed 10/19/2026

Plaintiff
The partner with three hangers left
Defendant
The partner who took the closet

Statement of claim

When we moved in we split the closet in half. Now I have three hangers at the end and my winter jackets are in a suitcase under the bed. She says her side just grew. Sides do not grow.

Charge

Gradual annexation of roughly 80% of a shared closet, one hanger at a time

Judgment

Guilty

Partner found guilty of growing her side of the closet to 80%

Sentence

The defendant returns the closet to an even split this weekend, marks the line with tape, and buys a rolling rack for the overflow.

How the court usually rules on this

The court starts from an even split of shared storage, adjusted for anything the couple agreed on. More clothes do not create a right to more space, though they can be a reason to ask. Space taken a hanger at a time is still taken. The usual remedy is a measured line and an extra rack for whoever needs it.
