The friend who had the salad v. The group
Filed 10/05/2026
- Plaintiff
- The friend who had the salad
- Defendant
- The group
Statement of claim
I had a salad and water. Everyone else had cocktails and steak. They split the bill six ways and I paid $68 for a salad.
Charge
Splitting a bill evenly where one party ordered a salad and water
Judgment
Both at fault
Group found at fault for charging $68 for a salad
Sentence
The group will refund the difference above $25 to the plaintiff. The plaintiff will say so at the start of the next dinner.
How the court usually rules on this
The court accepts even splits as a social convenience when orders are similar. It applies a simple test: if one person's share would be less than two thirds of the even split, that person pays only for that order. Saying so at the start of the meal is the cleanest way and the court encourages it.
