Is it rude to not finish food someone cooked for you?
Not guilty
The short answer
No, not if you are full and you say so kindly. A host who refills a plate without asking cannot complain about what is left.
The ruling
From the public record. Names are replaced with roles.

Case no.PC-2026-06146
The friend who made the baked ziti v. The guest who left half a plate
Filed 10/18/2026
- Plaintiff
- The friend who made the baked ziti
- Defendant
- The guest who left half a plate
Statement of claim
I made baked ziti for dinner. She had one plate, then I gave her a second, then a third. She left half of the third. I spent four hours on that ziti.
Charge
Failure to finish a third helping of baked ziti served without request
Judgment
Not guilty
Guest found not guilty of leaving half of a third helping
Sentence
No sentence. The plaintiff asks before refilling, and the defendant compliments the ziti once more, in writing.
How the court usually rules on this
The court expects guests to try what they are served and thank the cook. It does not expect anyone to finish every plate, especially when the host controls the portions. Leaving most of the food untouched with no explanation is different and may be rude. A short compliment usually settles the matter better than eating past full.
