Is it rude to send food back at a restaurant?

Both at fault

The short answer

Sending a dish back once for a real problem is fine and expected. Sending it back three times, or apologizing for your friend over his head, is not.

How the court usually rules on this

The court accepts that restaurants want to fix a wrong order and that saying so politely is not rude. The bar rises with each return, because at some point the diner is asking for a different meal. Companions are expected to stay out of it, not take the kitchen's side out loud. These cases often end with both diners at fault.
