Is it rude to ask friends to help you move?

Guilty

The short answer

Asking is fine if you give a week's notice and pay in food and drinks. Asking the night before, or paying in one slice of pizza, is not.

How the court usually rules on this

The court considers helping a friend move a standard favor, and asking for it is not rude in itself. What the court checks is notice, the size of the job and what the helpers receive. A meal and drinks are the customary payment, and the court expects them to be generous. Hiding a piano until the helpers arrive is treated as a separate offense.
