Is it rude to invite someone last minute?

Both at fault

The short answer

A last-minute invite is fine for casual plans and can be a compliment. It is rude when the plan was made days ago and the invite only fills an empty seat.

The ruling

From the public record. Names are replaced with roles.

Case no.PC-2026-06191

The friend invited at 7:40 p.m. v. The friend who sent the invite

Filed 10/18/2026

Plaintiff
The friend invited at 7:40 p.m.
Defendant
The friend who sent the invite

Statement of claim

At 7:40 my friend texted asking if I wanted to come to dinner at 8. The reservation was for four and was made a week ago. Someone had cancelled. I asked if I was the backup. She said no, and then kind of.

Charge

Late invitation to fill a vacated seat at a dinner booked a week earlier

Judgment

Both at fault

Both friends at fault in the 7:40 p.m. backup invite dispute

Sentence

The defendant invites the plaintiff to the next dinner at least three days ahead. The plaintiff answers future invites with yes or no, not a question.

How the court usually rules on this

The court does not treat a short-notice invitation as an insult in itself. Spontaneous plans are by nature last minute. The court looks at whether the plan existed earlier and the invitee was added to fill a seat. The invitee is still expected to decline politely rather than reply with a complaint.
