Is it rude to cancel plans an hour before?

Guilty

The short answer

Yes, when the other person is already on the way. Illness and emergencies are defenses; not feeling like it is not.

Just for fun. Written by a computer judge. Not a real court, not legal advice, no legal effect.

How the court usually rules on this

The court accepts real reasons and is generous with them. What it looks at is timing: a cancellation after the other person has left home costs that person the trip and the evening. An apology with a new date, offered in the same message, usually reduces the sentence.
